In Tucson, September means one more month of summer. It's still hot and school has begun, but we are all shedding our summer-ness still and pushing forward into the lovely fall season. Our transition into fall begins with a trip to Los Angeles to share our wares at The Unique LA Fall Market. Join us, along with a cornucopia of other rad makers, this coming weekend, Saturday and Sunday (September 10th and 11th) at The California Market Center in downtown Los Angeles. What's Inspiring Tasha This Month...
I believe we all have themes that weave in and out of our lives; themes that help build our character, wellbeing, and substance while shaping us to become who we are in this world. With this in mind, I'm shedding the stresses and struggles of summer as we reach fall, and am finding myself drawn to a few themes that have been present in my life since I was a child: music, architecture & design; and a need for balance.
I have a clarity of inspiration that feels so fresh, despite the fact the crux of this is a color combination that has played a common theme throughout my life: Black and Gold. To me, this dynamic color combination is so classic, but always refreshing. If you know me, you will know that these colors are always in my palette. My closet is arranged by color, starting with black (which easily takes up the first third of the space), then subtly moving back from many dark shades of blue, grey, and brown, and into actual colors and a handful of white items.
Black and gold, though certainly not new, is always exciting: a little rebellious, but classic. The color black relates to the hidden, the secretive, and the unknown, and, as a result, creates an air of mystery. It is thought that black absorbs negative energy, so it's a good idea to carry something black with you to absorb any negative energy that may come your way. Gold has a weight to it that is so comforting and tangible to me. Gold conjures illumination, love, compassion, courage, passion, magic, and wisdom, as well as wealth and prosperity. The combination of Black and Gold together creates an immediately elegant balance.
So this combo is my rock for the fall season, and I am so excited to reinvent many of my existingpieces in black and gold. I have always been inspired by ancient Egyptian & Greek jewelry and the imagery of animals (particularly serpents and birds); you will see these themes in many of my new pieces this season. I am also pulling in another ongoing theme: 80s punk and hip hop street style and culture. You will see my take on big, bold statement pieces. These designs are representations of recurring themes in my life, and perhaps in yours as well.
If you looked through this month's moodboard, you won't be surprised when you see many of our designs are in black and gold. I love this combo, always, and it seems so appropriate for this fall. Go bold, go classic, with many existing pieces, such as the African Wilds line and African Crowned Crane Necklace being pushed into fall-wear in bold black and gold.
I have introduced the new Oro y Negro Hoops as well. Black Spinel with vintage Afghani brass and vermeil. I'll also be adding some designs over the next few weeks, so keep your eyes peeled for more great styles in this classic color palette.
We added some extra substance to the already classic Arrow Diamond Ring, with extra width. These are more substantial and so perfectly balanced with etched arrows and flush-set, recycled diamonds. They're perfect as wedding bands, or as a new modern heirloom for anyone with inimitable style.
Tucson has so many fantastic events coming up in late September and beginning of October. Here are a few of our top picks:
September 30th, MOCA Tucson's Fall Fundraiser: Carnaval d'Avant-Garde
MAST's own Sofie and Mellow are co-hosts for this fundraiser benefiting one of our favorite Tucson treasures. The past & future collide in this special performative & interactive event designed to take you into the realm of the surreal.
Check out the event page for details on tickets, time, performances, food, drinks, and attire!
September 30–October 8, 2016: Tucson Modernism Week
One of our favorite annual local events, Tucson Modernism Week, is a fantastically fun and informative week founded by the Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation. The hosts help illuminate and celebrate Tucson's mid-century design and style. This week-long event is jam-packed with lectures, tours, an expo and—of course—parties!
